When it comes to supplies, there aren't very many that you'll need. The pet owner is responsible for providing all food, water, treats, collars and leashes, and other applicable pet care supplies. However, with the owner's OK, it's a good idea to bring treats or toys along with you so that your animal charge will associate your visits with something good. Many pets become stressed when their owners are away, and by providing them with a special treat or rousing game of fetch, you can alleviate some of their anxiety.

After you've got all your licensing and insurance, it's time to advertise. When you're first starting out, there are some low cost ways to get the word out about your services. Your local Yellow Pages, newspapers and pennysavers are a good place to start. You can also print colorful flyers and post them at community bulletin boards around your neighborhood, at places like supermarkets, dry cleaners and laundromats. Also, check with the pet stores in your area and see if they'll let you post your flyers there. Another good place would be dog groomers in your area. Many local groomers would be more than happy to trade advertising -- they can refer their clients who need a petsitter to you, and you can refer your clients that need a groomer to them.

If you provide quality, trustworthy services, you'll find that not only will you get repeat customers, you'll get referrals as well. And that's the surest way to a thriving business!

Your rates should depend on the area of the country where you are and the number of animals you care for at one time. In a middle to upper class region of the country, many people pay $25 or even more per day for the services of a qualified petsitter. As you can see, this can add up if you get a large clientele.
